Thunder Bay District’s Great Big Crunch a Big Success Thanks to Local Provider

Over 15,000 apples plus 51 schools equaled a big success for Thunder Bay District’s Great Big Crunch event on March 6th.

Since 2015, the Thunder Bay Red Cross Student Nutrition Program has collaborated with Belluz Farms to offer fruits or vegetables for the Great Big Crunch. Providing locally grown produce has been a great way to support the community, reduce the environmental impact of farming, and provide the freshest, most nutritious options.

The fun annual event highlights food as a creative teaching tool, while focusing on access to healthy food in schools and agricultural awareness.

Nor’wester View Public School is one of 500 schools from across Canada expected to participate in the Great Big Crunch this year. Everyone is encouraged to connect online, “make noise for healthy school food,” and celebrate Nutrition Month.

The school thanked Belluz Farms for their apples, and had this to say about the event:

The Great Big Crunch is a time dedicated to celebrating healthy food at school and highlighting the need for a universal, healthy school food program for Canada.

Did you know:

  • Canada is 37th out of 41 countries in providing healthy foods for kids
  • 1/3 of students do not eat a healthy breakfast before they head to school
