Canada’s inflation rate now at 30-year high of 5.7% | CBC News

Inflation continues to rise in Canada, bringing with it higher food prices. Over the past year the cost of food has risen 7.4% and, as prices continue to rise, it becomes increasingly important to ensure all children have access to nourishing food through Student Nutrition Programs. Cost to feed a family of four will hit nearly $15,000 next year as ‘perfect storm’ strikes food prices | Toronto Star

Inflation: More ‘rockiness’ at grocery stores expected | CTV News

According to the Bank of Canada, the inflation causing the dramatic rise in food prices will continue for months. Already, the cost of some products has gone up by 20-25%, and it’s no surprise to anyone that many families are struggling to put food on the table. Milk and butter prices to soar after Canadian Dairy Commission sets record price hikes |Toronto Star

Next month the wholesale price of milk will increase by 8.4%; and butter will increase by 12.4% in February. This will have a serious impact on Student Nutrition Programs, as meals served always include dairy foods and alternatives. Prices are way up, and don’t expect meaningful relief soon | Toronto Star

In Canada, consumer prices have been increasing, making it more and more difficult for families to make ends meet. In September, Statistics Canada released its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI), showing the fastest year over year increase since 2003. The price of food is one of the main components of the CPI that continues to increase, with no sign of stopping. As food prices rise, making sure hungry children have access to Student Nutrition Programs is crucial.

Heightened food worries linked to worse mental health during COVID-19 pandemic | UBC News

While food insecurity was already a concern before COVID-19, since the pandemic these concerns have worsened, and many families are struggling. A study conducted by the University of British Columbia and the Canadian Mental Health Association has found that people worried about food supply are nearly twice as likely to experience worsened mental health compared to those that don’t have food supply concerns.* Given the crucial link between food security and mental health, ensuring that children always have access to nourishing food is imperative. Student Nutrition Programs play an important role in providing children with access to food, everyday, in their classrooms.

Rising food prices see Canadians put less meat in their grocery baskets | Toronto Star

According to a report from Dalhousie’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab, and Caddle, food costs are rising. In particular, the cost of many staples such as meat and dairy have increased.  Now more than ever, it is critical that food insecure children have access to Student Nutrition Programs.
