Celebrating the Heart of Student Nutrition: Our Volunteers

Across Ontario, thousands of dedicated volunteers wake up early, roll up their sleeves, and make a powerful difference in the lives of children and youth each day. These are the champions behind the Student Nutrition Programs—serving everything from fresh fruit to warm breakfasts, and always delivering it with care and kindness.

Student Nutrition Programs (SNPs) ensure that children and youth have access to healthy meals and snacks so they can start their school day ready to learn. But these programs wouldn’t be possible without the steady hands and generous hearts of volunteers who prepare, organize, and serve food in schools and community spaces across the province.

From parents and grandparents to retirees, educators, and students themselves, volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing their time, energy, and passion to support Ontario’s young people. Many show up week after week, year after year—often quietly, without expectation of recognition. Yet their impact is profound. A nutritious meal can help improve concentration, support emotional well-being, and reduce barriers to participation and success in school.

During especially challenging times—whether it be the pandemic, inflation, or food insecurity—volunteers have continued to step up, adapting with creativity and resilience. Their work ensures that no child has to face their day hungry, and that every student feels valued and cared for.

To every volunteer across Ontario who helps make Student Nutrition Programs possible: thank you. Your generosity nourishes more than bodies—it builds stronger, healthier communities, one meal at a time. You are the heart of this vital work, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do.

“Volunteering with the Student Nutrition Program has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Each morning, I see the difference a healthy meal can make—not just in a child’s energy levels, but in their confidence and eagerness to learn. It’s more than serving food; it’s about offering a sense of belonging and care. Knowing that I play a small part in a child’s day, helping them feel ready to take on the world, is truly fulfilling.”
