Celebrating Cultural Diversity Through Food in Schools

One of the most powerful ways to honor and embrace diverse cultures is through food. VON’s Ontario Student Nutrition Program (OSNP) – Southwest Region recognizes this, and by enhancing school menus with culturally diverse and inclusive foods, we help foster understanding, representation, and a sense of community for students.

OSNP collaborates with knowledge holders in our communities and community partners like GrowingChefs! Ontario to create culturally relevant recipes that reflect the traditions of various cultures, ensuring students feel represented in their school nutrition programs. These recipes are paired with food literacy resources that allow students to learn not only about food but also about the cultures behind them. By involving chefs, knowledge holders, and community groups, OSNP ensures the authenticity of these foods.

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, OSNP piloted monthly cultural menu enhancements in a small sample of London schools. After receiving positive feedback from students, we expanded this project across the Southwest Region, utilizing our food delivery program to reach approximately 250 schools with culturally relevant foods items.

The cultural celebrations include:

  • Tamil Heritage Month (January): Featuring Fenugreek/Mathri Crackers, a savory snack representing Tamil traditions.
  • Black History Month (February): Celebrating African culture with Daakwa, a spicy peanut snack ball from West Africa, and plantain crisps, as a staple food in African and Caribbean countries.
  • Brazilian Carnival (February/March): Pao de Queijo, a gluten-free cheese bread, brings the flavors of Brazil to students.
  • Hellenic Heritage Month (March): Feta cheese and Pita crackers highlights the ancient food traditions of Greek culture for Hellenic Heritage Month.
  • Eid al-Fitr (March/April): Barazek, a Syrian cookie, celebrates the joyous end of Ramadan.
