Overcoming Challenges

We’ve observed the increasing challenges schools are facing due to the current economic climate. With grant funding remaining limited, many schools are struggling to meet the rising costs of providing nutritious food to students. Hunger has become more prevalent, and the price of healthy food options continues to climb. In addition, post-pandemic, we are seeing a decline in volunteerism and financial fundraising, which has made it more difficult for programs to stretch their budgets and sustain their operations throughout the school year.

At Healthy Eating for Better Learning (HEBL), we have worked diligently to support schools by offering budgeting strategies and providing as much subsidized programming as possible with partners like Larabie INC, including cheese, backpack program, apples, and carrots, etc. We have also worked closely with schools to identify strategies that allow them to maintain their nutrition programs while minimizing costs. One such suggestion has been encouraging schools to seek volunteers who can offer their time preparing snacks – limiting the high purchase of prepackaged snacks, rather than monetary donations.

Despite these challenges, we remain committed to working with schools across all regions to ensure students continue to have access to the nutritious foods they need to succeed in the classroom.
